What Flowers to Send to a Funeral: A Simple Guide

When someone dies, sending flowers is a way to show love and respect when words are hard to find. But if you have never ordered funeral flowers before, it can be difficult to know what is appropriate. This guide explains the most common choices and who usually sends them.

Flowers from close family

The closest family members usually choose the main tributes that sit on or beside the coffin:

  • Casket spray: an arrangement that rests on top of the coffin. There is usually just one, chosen by the immediate family, such as a partner or children.
  • Letters and names: fresh flower letters spelling Mum, Dad, Nan or a name, usually placed alongside the coffin.
  • Hearts: a solid or open heart, a popular choice from a partner, child or grandchild.
  • Personal tributes: a design that reflects the person, such as a football shirt, a hobby or a favourite drink.

Flowers from wider family and friends

Relatives, friends and neighbours often send a wreath. A wreath is one of the most traditional funeral tributes, and its circular shape is a symbol of eternal life. Groups, such as work colleagues or a club, often join together to send one wreath or arrangement between them.

Check the family’s wishes first

Before ordering, it is worth checking the funeral notice or asking the family. Some families ask for “family flowers only”, with donations to a charity instead. If so, a donation or a card is the kindest way to show you care.

Choosing colours

There is no right or wrong choice. White and cream are traditional and calming, while bright, colourful flowers can celebrate a full and happy life. Many families choose the person’s favourite colours, or colours linked to something they loved, such as a football team.

When to order and where to send them

Funeral flowers are usually delivered to the funeral director or the venue before the service, rather than to the family’s home. Ideally, order about a week before the funeral, so there is time to design your tribute. If the funeral is sooner, still ask, as florists can often help at short notice.
